30% completed review report of Design Schematics and Construction Documents

Herman Fuechtmann speaking:

Hi! I want to give you an update from the Renovation and Elevator Project Committee.

Last November 2020, Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) approved the 30% completed review report of Design Schematics and Construction Documents for Thompson Hall. MNHS, in their review, asked some questions and one main question was about why it was proposed to remove the coal room and ash bin that is located in the basement boiler room? Our response was that the concrete slab outside is extremely porous with numerous cracks. Water has infiltrated this space and there is a significant amount of mold. To properly seal this slab would be extremely difficult. In the end, it may require a full replacement of the slab because of its current condition. We decided that it was not worth repairing and would be cost-effective to just remove it.
